Message yes, another slightly stupid clutch maint related question. i'd rather be
safe than sorry so i'm asking.

i just replaced my rear main seal this morning and while tapping the new
one in, it ended up seating farther in than the old one. the old one was
flush with the back side of the block, but the new one was tapped in so
that it's recessed.

i haven't been able to find any information (fsm & search) that would
indicate that this will be a problem, but i wanted to ask to try to be
certain.

if it wasn't already clear, yes, this is the first time i have replaced my
clutch and friends.

also, less interesting but perhaps mentionable, the old seal had a thin
layer of liquid gasket on the back but no signs of leaking. neither the
tech nor the fsm mention using liquid gasket on the rear main seal. has
anyone seen this before? was this likely the work of someone who had
been in there before, or something from the factory?

thanks.
